Does your heart hurt, too? A message from Lisa...and her Dad 💔

My first memorable introduction to the fact there's a lot of suffering in the world - and that it's not easily fixable - was in 6th grade. My class had a subscription to Cricket Magazine in which there were short stories. In one, a teenaged foster child shared her painful journey and as I read a passage to my Dad one night, I began to cry. 

I was overcome by that familiar prickly, hot sinking combination of sadness, anger and helplessness when I read about George Floyd's murder.

I know you get it.

I've often been told I I'm 'too sensitive', 'overdramatic,' or the best one, 'a sap' (can I hear a "me, too?"). Rather than being ashamed, I hold up that sensitivity like a torch as I'd much rather feel everything than not. I want to soak up the beauty all around me, but I also try to sit with hard stuff. My Dad taught me that (still does). Rather than give up in defeat or turn away from inequity and injustice, I choose feel it all. 

The thing is, when harnessed and positively directed, hurt can turn into fuel, fuel to inspiration, and inspiration to living with an intention to make a difference. 

I also know making a difference starts with me -  acknowledging my own white privilege for example, committing to self-care practices so that I have the resilience to sit with discomfort, and committing to educating myself and those around me so that together, we can learn a better way.

Like me, you chose profession working with children and youth because you wanted to help them in becoming the best versions of themselves. 

Beyond math and reading, you want help them develop self and social awareness, compassion and the ability to make responsible decisions and contributions as a member of a world that still struggles to embrace our shared humanity.

It's not a panacea, of course, but integrating simple, trauma-informed mindful moments to support social and emotional learning and positive climate in the classroom and beyond is a HUGE head start.
